Commentary

At the beginning of 2016, the year of commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the death of Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare, I received from the Zoar wind quintet -whose members had mostly been members of the National Youth Orchestra of Spain only a few years before- the commission to compose a work based on my opera D. Q. (Don Quixote in Barcelona), with a libretto by Justo Navarro and stage direction by La Fura dels Baus and premiered in 2000 at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, for a concert focused on works of both writers that was to take place a few months later.
This is how these Six fragments from "D. Q. (Don Quixote in Barcelona)" for wind quintet, in which I used some of the moments of the opera that fit especially to the characteristics of the new work. They were the following ones:

1) Recitative, on the first scene of the first act.
2) Aria of the Auctioneer (1st act)
3) Aria of the books (1st act)
4) Aria of Don Quixote (2nd act)
5) Scherzo of the Ancient Wonders Temporary Locator (1st act)
6) Finale (3rd act)

As can be seen, the piece for wind quintet does not intend to follow or recreate the plot line of the opera, but rather the selected fragments are presented based on their character and the contrasts they imply within the structural organization of the work.
