A great violinist
By Manuel del Campo
(Review published in SUR newspaper. Málaga, January 26, 2006)

The Málaga Philharmonic Orchestra concluded the twelfth Contemporary Music Cycle, organized by the orchestra itself, with nine sessions held at the Cánovas Theatre. Conducted by maestro José Luis Temes, an expert in the Spanish contemporary repertoire, the orchestra delivered an excellent concert, almost entirely focused on José Luis Turina de Santos, the cycle's special honoree, and featuring the world premiere of 'Plaza de Riego', a commissioned work by the Andalusian government from Málaga-born composer Luis A. Torres.
[...]
An extraordinary violinist, Ara Malikian, was the soloist in Turina's 'Violin Concerto', a piece that rises with lyrical sensitivity and meticulous writing while also exploring serialist paths. It requires a great performer and virtuoso, which it certainly had last night in the Lebanese-born Armenian Malikian. Before that, 'Two Symphonic Dances' -with the 'Waltz' being particularly remarkable- and, to conclude, 'The Harp and the Shadow'- both also composed by Turina -revealed the composer's artistic personality in achieving his objectives, whether expressionist or not. As always, Temes carried out a meticulous job, as did the Málaga Philharmonic and Malikian, who received much applause, with Turina and Temes present in the hall.
