Commentary
The
Three Pieces for Guitar were written in 1978. Both their aesthetics and their writing are entirely traditional, coinciding with a period of intense classical technical training. Originally, they were part of a
Suite in six movements, which was reduced to its final form in these three pieces.
Their titles are:
Lied,
Recitative and
Scherzo in Rondo. The first of them,
Lied, maintains the traditional ABA form of this type of composition. The first section begins over an obstinate pedal on the open fifth string, over which a phrase with an uncertain tonal atmosphere develops. The second section, more
cantabile in nature, is characterized by its broad harmonic sequences, fully idiomatic for the guitar. At the end of this section, the first section is briefly reprised.
The
Recitative is the most free in terms of form and aesthetics among these
Three Pieces. In its brevity, a series of harmonic and melodic elements are combined, culminating in a long phrase, in the broadest sense of the idea of "recitative".
The
Scherzo in Rondo presents a scherzo theme treated in the form of a "refrain", as between each of its repetitions appears a "couplet", thus maintaining the classical form of the rondo. The second couplet is an abbreviated repetition of the second section of the
Lied.
Dedicated to Venezuelan guitarist Eduardo Torres and revised by José Luis Rodrigo, the
Three Pieces were premiered by the latter in the "Gonzalo de Berceo" Hall in Logroño, on March 26, 1979.
